How to Fill a Pothole (and Why They Form)

by

Last Updated on December 8, 2023

Potholes are a fact of life. We all despise them, but we all have to deal with them. They seem to form overnight and can make even the shortest drive a nightmare. So what causes these pesky potholes in the first place, and more importantly, how can they be fixed?

What are potholes and what causes them to form?

Potholes are a common problem on roads and highways. They occur when the pavement is damaged, usually by water or traffic. The damage can cause the pavement to crack, allowing water to seep in and soften the foundation. As it softens cracks open up causing erosion, eventually causing it to collapse. Potholes can vary in size, but they are often large enough to damage vehicles. Some potholes are so deep that they can cause tires to blow out or even cause accidents.

The cost of repairing potholes

The cost of repairing a pothole varies greatly depending on several variables. You need to take into consideration cost of materials, cost of labor, size, depth, severity, and location of the pothole. The easiest way to determine the cost of repairing a pothole is to get a free estimate from Top Job. We’ll look at all the factors that affect price, and give you an accurate estimate to complete the project.

How to repair a pothole

There are a few different ways to repair a pothole, but the most common method is to fill the hole with asphalt. Here are the steps you need to take to repair a pothole.

  1. The first step is to clean out the pothole. This will help the repair material to adhere better.
  2. Once the hole is filled, apply a layer of asphalt patching material.
  3. Finally, use a tamper or roller to compact the patching material.
  4. Once it is level with the surrounding pavement, the pothole should be successfully repaired!

Prevention is better than cure – some tips on how to avoid potholes

The best way to deal with potholes is to avoid them altogether. Here are some tips on how to prevent potholes from forming in the first place.

One of the most effective ways to prevent potholes is to seal cracks in the pavement. This will help to keep water from seeping into the pavement and causing damage.

It is also important to fill potholes as soon as they form. The longer a pothole goes unrepaired, the more damage it will cause and the more expensive it will be to fix.

Finally, you can help to prevent potholes by driving slowly and avoiding sudden braking or acceleration. This will help to reduce the amount of stress on the pavement and will help to prevent damage.

Final Thoughts

Potholes are a nuisance, but they can be repaired relatively easily. By following these steps, you can fix a pothole quickly and efficiently. And by taking some preventive measures, you can help to avoid potholes altogether.

I’m not sure how the service actually is, but some old guy in a Top Job Toyota was riding my butt today and flipped me off, or it was maybe an aggressive wave at the red light near the Logan library. Hope his day gets better. 12/8 at 230

Did a great job on the 3" overlay for my very old and deteriorated half circle driveway. Looks brand new. All the transitions to concrete are near perfectly matched when I wasn't sure they could do it. It's almost weird now not feeling the bump driving out of the garage or over our bridge.

What Our Customers Are Saying

Very impressed with the quality of their work and the organization of the company. The project estimator was spot on as to when the bid would be received and the work was professional  from start to finish. I appreciated the opportunity for a walkthrough inspection after the crack filling was completed as I had some very large cracks in the asphalt. I give this company a ten out of ten (which I really do) and highly recommend them.
