Today we’ll be going over some environmental facts concerning the sustainability of asphalt and the benefits it provides for everyone.
- In the U.S. alone massive amounts of asphalt is reused. About 2 million tons of plastic is recycled every year and by comparison over 60 million tons of asphalt is recycled and reused. That is over 30 times as much!
- Asphalt is 100% reusable and the quality, durability, and usability of the product doesn’t deteriorate or diminish AT ALL.
- Using asphalt for pavement provides not only for cost effective, safe, quality, and long lasting roads and projects, but the fact that the materials are sustainable and reusable help keep our earth vital and prosperous.
Porous Asphalt and the Environment
- Porous asphalt is also known as pervious, permeable, “popcorn,” or open-graded asphalt and also lends itself to sustainability.
- It is a standard hot-mix asphalt with reduced sand or fines and allows water to drain through it.
- This gives porous asphalt the benefit of being able to reduce storm water runoff volume, rate, and pollutants.
- It is an excellent, environmentally friendly tool for storm water management.
- Furthermore, with porous asphalt, de-icing chemicals can be reduced by 75-100%, further reducing the use and runoff of pollutants.
