Asphalt paving can be a tricky process, and if you’re not careful, you can easily make mistakes that will cause your project to fail. In this blog post, we will discuss 7 of the most common asphalt paving mistakes, so that you can avoid them!

Why Preparation is Important

Before we get into the meat and potatoes, let’s talk about asphalt preparation. This is arguably the most important part of the entire process, and if it’s not done correctly, it can cause a whole host of problems. Asphalt paving preparation is important because poor preparation can lead to cracking and other problems down the road.

How Long Should Asphalt Last?

If your surface is prepared properly, you are setting yourself up for a long lasting asphalt pavement. It is important to note that there are many variables that will affect the lifespan of your asphalt, such as traffic volume, weather conditions, and even the type of sub-base you use. That being said, if everything is done correctly, and the asphalt is maintained properly, you can expect your asphalt pavement to last for 50+ years!

The Top 7 Mistakes

Now, let’s get into the top asphalt paving mistakes that you need to avoid.

1. Not Giving the Base Enough Support

One of the most common mistakes made when laying asphalt is not giving the base enough support. The base is what provides stability for the asphalt, so if it’s not strong enough, the entire surface can become compromised. Make sure to compact the base thoroughly before laying down the asphalt.

2. Laying the Asphalt Too Thin

Another mistake that’s often made is laying the asphalt too thin. This can lead to cracks and other damage forming on the surface over time. As a general rule of thumb, you should aim for a thickness of at least 2.5 inches.

3. Not Compacting the Asphalt Properly

Once you’ve laid down the asphalt, it’s important to compact it properly in order to ensure a smooth, even surface. If you don’t compact it properly, you run the risk of having an uneven surface that’s more susceptible to cracking and damage. Use a plate compactor or roller to ensure optimal results.

4. Not Repairing Damage Promptly

Your asphalt surface will inevitably sustain some degree of damage over time. It’s important to repair any cracks or holes as soon as they appear to prevent further damage from occurring. Neglecting to do this can cause your entire surface to become damaged beyond repair and will require complete replacement.

5. Skimping on Materials

When it comes to asphalt paving, skimping on materials is never a good idea. Using cheaper materials will likely result in a subpar final product that won’t last as long as one made with high-quality materials. To get the best results, be sure to use materials from a reputable supplier.

6. Hiring an Inexperienced Contractor

Perhaps one of the most common mistakes made when hiring someone to pave an asphalt surface is hiring an inexperienced contractor. If possible, always choose a contractor who has ample experience and positive reviews. Otherwise, you run the risk of ending up with an inferior final product.

7. Improper Maintenance After Installation

Finally, one mistake that many people make after having an asphalt surface installed is failing to properly maintain it. Just like any other type of investment, your new pavement needs regular upkeep to stay looking its best and performing optimally. Be sure to sweep away any debris regularly, fill any cracks or holes promptly, and have your pavement professionally sealed every few years.

I’m not sure how the service actually is, but some old guy in a Top Job Toyota was riding my butt today and flipped me off, or it was maybe an aggressive wave at the red light near the Logan library. Hope his day gets better. 12/8 at 230

Did a great job on the 3" overlay for my very old and deteriorated half circle driveway. Looks brand new. All the transitions to concrete are near perfectly matched when I wasn't sure they could do it. It's almost weird now not feeling the bump driving out of the garage or over our bridge.

What Our Customers Are Saying

Very impressed with the quality of their work and the organization of the company. The project estimator was spot on as to when the bid would be received and the work was professional  from start to finish. I appreciated the opportunity for a walkthrough inspection after the crack filling was completed as I had some very large cracks in the asphalt. I give this company a ten out of ten (which I really do) and highly recommend them.
